Most of the time, when I back a Kickstarter, it's not so much a funding of an idea or effort, but substantially as a way of pre-ordering something cool, with a smaller part of helping make sure something gets made that might otherwise not.
The guy who made the awesome and uniquely novel mobile game Spaceteam is doing a Kickstarter "making it possible for [him] to keep working on free games for a whole year." I've certainly enjoyed Spaceteam a lot, and that's part of why I'm backing it, but I like the idea of this kind of small scale distributed patronage as a way of making cool stuff and supporting those who do.
You should try Spaceteam if you haven't, it's entertaining (you'll need a few other friends with smartphones).
