Rejoice ye that love the light.
Today's sunset at 4:12 in Newton is the earliest of the year, making
today the shortest day of the year for those who sleep through sunrise.
Why isn't the earliest sunset on the same day as the winter solstice?
See http://larry.denenberg.com/earliest-sunset.html for an explanation.
The date of the earliest sunset varies with latitude. Today is the day at my house in Newton. Farther south the earliest sunset has already occurred. In Philadelphia it was yesterday; at the equator it was in early November.
